What does the dipping method involve?
Dip galvanizing immerses a suitable fabricated iron or steel component in molten zinc after surface preparation. It is more than applying paint to the visible surface: zinc forms a metallurgical bond with steel. Component geometry and access to surfaces therefore matter to coating continuity. The interiors of hollow sections also require consideration.
From the workshop to the galvanizing plant
Technical drawings, the component list, dimensions and material information are reviewed together during quotation and acceptance. Weld slag, paint or marking residues may affect preparation. Venting and drainage openings should be planned during fabrication. Hanging and handling arrangements also need discussion before coating, because altering completed fabrications can delay delivery.
What is checked after coating?
Final inspection considers coating continuity, thickness and surface features affecting use. Threaded joints, contact surfaces and assembly holes are assessed against project requirements. Matching component identification with inspection records supports traceability at delivery. Distinguishing dipping from other coatings
The word galvanizing can refer to different zinc-coating processes. Hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication is not the same production route as electroplating or continuously galvanized sheet. If an enquiry simply specifies galvanized material, clarify the method. For example, cutting and welding pregalvanized sheet involves a different sequence from dipping a complete fabrication. Cut edges, weld areas and connections matter when assessing the difference. Do not compare products solely because both look grey; compare process, scope and delivery requirements.
