There is no single value for every component
Galvanized coating thickness relates to material properties, section thickness and galvanizing conditions. Treating one micron value as correct for all products can be misleading. Review the applicable standard, product scope and acceptance requirements together. Group thin components and heavy structural sections separately instead of assigning requirements from one assumption.
How should a measurement be interpreted?
A reading from one point may not represent the entire component. Instrument suitability, calibration and selection of measurement areas affect the assessment. Reports should identify the components and surfaces measured. Consider appearance together with thickness information; brightness or colour alone cannot establish coating adequacy.
What to clarify at quotation stage
Provide the technical team with the current specification, material list and any special acceptance requirements. Explain thickness expectations alongside exposure conditions and other coating needs. Agree on report format and delivery documentation in advance. Confirm the current scope of any document in the Galmetsan archive; an archived document alone is not evidence of conformity for a particular order.
An example of reviewing a measurement report
A shipment may include sections and plates of different thicknesses. If the report gives only one average, ask which component group it represents. Component identification, measurement area and relevant acceptance requirements should be clear in the record. Interpretation depends on suitable instrument use and surface characteristics as well as instrument condition. A difference at one location does not establish the condition of the whole shipment. The technical team can determine whether further inspection is needed and relate the decision to the project specification.
